The Quiet Hustle Behind Every Great Show: The Story of Our Community Seats

When you attend a lively community event—whether it is cheering on local acts at Norfolk’s Got Talent, watching graduates cross the stage at Simcoe Composite School, or tapping your toes to the Gentlemen of Harmony—it’s easy to focus solely on what is happening on stage.

What usually goes unnoticed, however, is the flurry of activity hours before the doors open and well after the house lights come back on.

One of the many behind-the-scenes traditions of the Simcoe Lions Club revolves around something fundamental yet essential: setting up and tearing down the rows of auditorium chairs and stage risers.

Ever since the auditorium space at SCS was created, the Simcoe Lions have partnered to ensure the venue is properly equipped for the entire community. The club provides comfortable seating and risers that serve far beyond everyday school events. Over the years, these chairs have accommodated proud parents at commencements, audiences at local dance club recitals, music lovers at community concerts, and theatre-goers at our own annual Lions Shows.

Most recently, our crew was on-site setting up the house for Norfolk’s Got Talent, transforming an empty floor into an auditorium ready to welcome hundreds of eager spectators.

What makes these chairs truly special, however, isn’t the steel frames or the fabric—it’s the names attached to them. Every single chair was generously sponsored by local individuals, families, and area businesses who invested in building a dedicated gathering space for our town. Each seat features a dedicated sponsorship tag, serving as a quiet tribute to the local pride and generosity that keep Norfolk County thriving.

The next time you settle in for a show or celebration at Simcoe Composite School, take a brief moment before the lights dim to glance at the back of your chair. You may find the name of a trusted family doctor, a favourite downtown merchant, a longtime friend, or a neighbour who stepped up to ensure our community always has a place to come together.
